University of Massachusetts received a $9.5 Million grant to research fragile X syndrome, the most common inherited I/DD.  Previous research performed on mice showed that fragile X can be reversed and researchers are interested in investigating that process in humans.  Fragile X affects about 1 in 4,000 men and 1 in 6,000 women and 30% to 50% of people with fragile X have autism-related features.

5 Tips for Securing Technology Grants

Posted by Mike Holihan on Wed, Nov 26, 2014 @ 08:50 AM

If funds were made available, would your provider agency have an Agency Management Platform implemented?  If the answer is yes, then securing a grant for new technology could be an option at your agency.  According to Nonprofit Hub, over $50 billion dollars are awarded every year through grants to non-profit organizations.  If you aren’t going after some of that money, other agencies will and are currently very successful in the process.  However, applying for and receiving a grant for technology isn’t as simple as snapping your fingers or mailing in a form.  There is a skill and art to receiving grants.  We’ve compiled a list of 5 overarching tips to help you secure your technology grant based on industry research and feedback from our own customers.  While grant writing is oftentimes viewed as tedious and being a “shot in the dark”, if you apply a plan, pay attention to the details and specifically appeal to the foundation or organization who is awarding the grant, you can increase your chance for success.  Continue reading to find out more.

1. Writing to Requirements

This tip makes it to the top of the list because if you can’t write to the requirements, then you have no shot at getting a grant.  Having a succinct, organized and well written grant proposal is the number one tip we can give (however obvious) and can’t stress it enough.  The first thing you need to remember is that you are writing a grant proposal, not a novel.  Keep it simple!  Common practice suggests crafting a two to three sentence summary of the project and then laying out the specifics.  And, don’t be afraid to use bullet points for the specifics.  The easier to read and digest for the funders, the better.  In some cases, grant applications may be online forms. If that’s the case there could be character or word count limitations.

Another great tip around writing is to keep your application in the same format as the grant proposal.  Use their headings and sub headings so that it’s easy for them to connect your request to their specifics.  This will make it easier to for the reviewers to digest and follow along.

Why you should be in the cloud at your provider agency

Posted by Mike Holihan on Thu, Nov 20, 2014 @ 09:59 AM

Does this picture look familiar to anyone that manages the IT at an agency?  If you so, you are not alone!  It's very common at a human service agency to have the IT operations shunned to a back corner of the office and given an empty closet to store all of your computer servers.  And very quickly this closet becomes your oasis - your happy place that very few people you work with appreciate!  Maybe you go in the server closet once a day to just check everything or do some back ups.  Maybe you go in there just to hear the gentle humming of the fans and relax your mind. Maybe you even take your lunch break in the server closet (this is not recommended!).  In any case, the server closet is your domain.  So knowing that, this headline might instantly make you defensive.  Listen, if anyone understands and appreciates the server closet, it's us!  We don't want to take away your happy place, but we do want to open your mind to the possibilities of what a cloud based dd provider software can do for your agency and the risks you mitigate by having it hosted in the cloud.  By the end of this blog post, my goal is to have you looking at your server closet in a new light - it's still your happy place but maybe it doesn't have all of those servers, just one.  What if you could fit a comfy chair in there?  Maybe you really could eat lunch in there, with a guest!  Let's find out how this is possible.
